Songbirds: Featured Co-Host
~Gary Carter~
   Gary has been photographing our natural world since 1980. His interest in photography started as a result of his hunting and fishing as a young boy growing up in rural Guilford County, North Carolina. Those early years instilled a love of the outdoors and nature. He continues to pursue that love by looking through the camera lens and sharing the beauty he sees with his photography. He has been published in numerous books, brochures, calendars, business reports and magazines. He sells his images through photo stock agencies and they are available for individual sales to the public by contacting him.
   Gary has developed three plus acres at his home for photographing songbirds and wildlife and offers photo weekends for photographers.
   He is a charter member of North American Nature Photographers Association and is a member of the Carolina Nature Photographers Association.

Wildlife of the Gulf Coast of Florida

~ Jason Hahn ~
   Jason Hahn is a professional nature photographer who specializes in capturing unique photographs of the creatures and scenery that make Florida such a special place. Certified as a Florida Master Naturalist, he uses this knowledge to capture exceptional photographs of wildlife and natural scenery in Florida and abroad. He has been widely published in books and magazines nationwide such as “Outdoor Photographer” Magazine and “Florida Wildlife” Magazine and has been involved in projects with organizations such as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
   Jason is an active member of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). His work was recently awarded top honors by NANPA, which selected three of his images to be included in their annual Showcase, one of which was selected as a “Top Ten” award winner for 2007. Jason is
the past Board President for a central Florida artist’s cooperative and his work can be found in galleries throughout the central Florida area as well as on his website.
   In addition to his photography, Jason regularly conducts photography workshops and seminars for amateur and professional photographers in both group and individual settings. ~ Eric Horan ~
   Eric Horan is a commercial photographer based in Beaufort, South Carolina. He graduated from the Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs with a degree in Commercial Art and Photography. His first job was photographing wildlife for the Colorado Fish, Games and Parks Department. Observing wildlife behavior, from Big Horn sheep, elk & coyotes to bullfrogs, opened the door to a life long study and appreciation of the natural world.
   From wildlife photography, Horan furthered his training in New York City, where he assisted some of the top photographers working in the commercial photography industry. In 1990, he established his own commercial photography business in the lowcountry, Eric Horan Photography, Inc. www.horanphoto.com and began servicing the growing resort development in the region, while continuing to pursue his passion outdoors. In 2000, Horan founded Southern Light Photographic, the publishing & photography fine art & gift line, providing a retail & wholesale outlet for his natural history images. Among the products available are his tabletop photography book Carolina Nature, A Photographer’s view of the Natural World of the Carolinas with over 200 images, and his annual photographic calendar featuring premier images of the coastal southeast. Eric also leads wildlife photo tours for experienced photographers in the Carolina Lowcountry and beyond.
   He has received notable awards in prestigious competitions covering a range of subject matter.
   Horan’s stock is represented by agencies internationally, his fine art available at area galleries and online. ~ Bill Lea ~
   Capturing intimate images of wildlife, scenery, wildflowers, and a variety of other natural subjects in “just the right light” has long been the trademark of Bill Lea’s photography. He may best be known for his artistic documentation of the various moods of the Great Smoky Mountains, black bears, and southern ecosystems. Photographing in the Smokies since 1975 has afforded this photographer limitless opportunities to observe and record the flora, fauna, and scenery of the region. Bill’s craft reflects his deep appreciation for nature and he communicates his enthusiasm and expertise as a natural history photographer and writer to others through workshops, feature articles, and civic presentations. He has been teaching photo workshops at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont since 1992.
   More than 7,000 of Bill’s photos have been presented in an array of books, calendars, magazines, advertisements and other publications. His work has appeared in Audubon Calendars, Defenders of Wildlife, Exploring the Smokies, National Geographic books, Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife, and many others. His three front covers in a row was a first in Field & Stream’s more than one hundred year history. He has authored a hardcover book titled Great Smoky Mountains Wildlife Portfolio and co-authored a softcover book titled Great Smoky Mountains Wonder & Light. His newest book Cades Cove – Window to a Secret World has just recently been released. ~Kevin Adams~
A naturalist, writer, teacher, and photographer, Kevin is the author of the books Our North Carolina, North Carolina’s Best Wildflower Hikes, Hiking Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Waterfalls of Virginia and West Virginia, Wildflowers of the Southern Appalachians, the recently revised and expanded North Carolina Waterfalls, and his newest work, North Carolina Then & Now. He also writes magazine articles and his photographs appear regularly in books, magazines, calendars, and advertisements across the country. Kevin enjoys teaching photography workshops and leading photo tours. He is an avid hiker, kayaker, backpacker, and rock scrambler. Other hobbies include astronomy and woodworking. He has traveled extensively across the southern Appalachians and in his home state of North Carolina. Kevin’s current project is a travel pictorial book titled Backroads of North Carolina.

Underwater Photography Of Manatees

   Bill and Diane Oestreich moved to Crystal River Florida in 1989. Originally in pursuit of a career in scuba diving, and life under the Florida sun, 18 years of hard work has brought them many underwater adventures. Bill and Diane are currently open water instructors for PADI and SDI.  Bill "Bird has been an active techincal diving instructor for the last 15 years, including Megalodon rebreathers.  Bill teaches through the NSS Cave Diving Section, IANTD, SDI/TDI, NACD, NAUI, and PADI. Owners of Bird's Underwater, Inc. a full service dive center since 1993, they have the unique opportunity to take people on guided tours to snorkel with the endangered Manatees. Crystal River supports the largest populatin of West Indian manatees in the world during the winter months. Manatees are friendly and gentle. ~ Joe & Joan Johnson ~
   Joe Johnson was an executive in the Philippines, Taiwan (where he met his wife, Joan) and China with Bestfoods for 13 years. An avid photographer from his youth, Joe took a workshop at Olympic National Park from renowned nature photographer George Lepp during a home leave in 1993. George introduced Really Right Stuff products to Joe who became an immediate loyal customer. Unilever acquired Bestfoods in 2000, and after 18 months Joe decided it was time to move on.
   About this same time Joe was decompressing with his favorite photography hobby on the internet and came across a picture of Really Right Stuff founders Bryan and Kathy Geyer. Joe was impressed enough to call Bryan and ask him if he was interested in selling the company. Bryan was indeed interested in retiring and within six months the deal was closed and Joan and Joe moved their family to Los Osos, CA to take over Really Right Stuff in July 2002. Joe and Joan quickly embraced internet online ordering and introduced many new products. Company growth was robust and in September 2005, the office was moved to a much bigger facility at 205 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo, CA.
